Every bit of platforming presents almost no challenge, and so do the enemies. With rotating platforms, ones that disappear shortly after stepping on them, and lightning platforms that can take out Astro in one hit. As the Editor of Push Square, Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation, from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between. He’s an expert on PS Studios and industry matters, as well as sports games and simulators.

This isn’t the first time the game has received surprise content years after its release. Astro’s Playroom threw an in-game Astro Bot party to celebrate the latter’s global launch. We know you’ve just got your brand new PS5 console and you’re probably excited to experience all that it has to offer.

And yet, even when Astro is pulling off his most basic moves in familiar environments, this game feels revelatory. The PS5’s new controller combines a built-in speaker with vibrating haptics to make interacting with the world feel like it’s literally happening in your hand. Astro running across a sandy beach sounds and feels completely different than running on a fluffy cloud, for example. It is worth noting that the game is maintained in a very colorful artistic style, which may appeal to both older and younger players. Astro’s Playroom has a new tool in that regard, of course, with the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller and its haptic feedback.

I have Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type II, meaning when it comes to gaming, I struggle with dexterity, strength, and mobility. The very opening of this game before even accessing a menu guides you through the controller, including the need to forcefully push down both triggers simultaneously. The use of resistant triggers has been a concern of mine since the announcement of the new DualSense controller. It is very important I mention that Sony does include the ability to change the trigger resistance at the system level – it can even be turned off completely if necessary. Although the game does go out of its way to demonstrate the various abilities of the DualSense controller it’s also a celebration of all PlayStation consoles up to this point. Also at the second Checkpoint, head left along the cliff to find a Bot kneeling in front of a lad with a staff.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is the more powerful version of the original PlayStation 5, similar to the PlayStation 4 Pro. Its signature feature is a dedicated chip for intelligent upscaling of a game’s rendered image, letting them hit resolution targets at a fraction of the processing power, allowing for higher framerates. 789win was usually done via Sony’s proprietary PSSR technique (which stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution). It also supports customizeable controller profiles that can be selected via one of the two Fn switches below the analog sticks.

Study the movement of platforms, observe what enemies are up ahead, and plan your approach accordingly. As you get better at playing games, you’ll get better at being able to make things up as you go. It’s worth noting however that this isn’t the same model from the demo. After jumping up the trigger platforms and tripping a Checkpoint, check the right-hand side for tow Bots hiding from a third with mushrooms on its head. The mushroom Bot refers to a Clicker, a human taken over by parasitic fungi, while the two characters are Joel and Ellie. Joel is holding a brick, a common weapon and means of distraction in the game.

Now jump back out and left to land on a silver switch, raising a block that helps you jump up to a second switch. Land on that one to raise another platform that lets you reach Puzzle Piece #4. The Access Controller is the first PlayStation controller designed to accommodate for the needs of various disabilities, allowing disabled gamers to play with greater ease. It includes multiple different stick caps, buttons with swappable tags, industry-standard AUX ports to connect other accessibility devices, and supports up to 30 different profiles.

In the picture above, you can spot the PSP, PS Vita and PSP Go port and button layouts from the top and bottom of the systems. The only unknown one is the one with the Ethernet port, which doesn’t match any PlayStation system. On one of the monitors in the Labo area is an image of a CD-ROM and a DVD. DVDs meanwhile aided the PS2 because its DVD drive meant that it could play DVD movies, an incredibly popular format for watching films at the time. Speaking of which, on a table is a Bot observing a gold plus with the Sacred Symbols on it.

With the way forward forged, return to the start of the level and, facing backwards to where you first started, look to the left side of the archway to spot some cables in the ground. Pull them to get a canister, which has a tiny net inside (like from Ape Escape!). Special Bots are hidden Bots scattered throughout each biome of Astro’s Playroom, and were added in the lead-up to the sequel, Astro Bot.

If you need more coins you can go replay levels you’ve already completed, grabbing the Puzzle Pieces and Artifacts again because those give a large number of coins when you obtained them again. There’s a number of these suits where the gameplay switches to 2D and you turn into a robot on a spring, that’s directed via motion controls and a press of the adaptive triggers. There’s also a rocket that works in a similar manner but where you have to push past the resistance it offers to fire the jets – which can also set fire to fuses and the game’s Bob-omb stand-ins.

Collecting all the Artefacts in Astro’s Playroom will unlock the Dude Raider Trophy. Please note that you will also collect some Artefacts after beating the final boss in the game. Prince of Persia is a 1989 cinematic platform game developed and published by Broderbund for the Apple II.

It also teases that a selection of gatchas, or collectibles that can be earned via an in-game arcade machine, have been added, too. On its own, Astro’s Playroom would be a fun platforming distraction fit for younger gamers or families. Its world is vibrant and wonderfully detailed, and it looks exceptional on the PS5. But in all honesty, this isn’t so much a game as it is a showpiece for what the DualSense controller can do. And as a result, this isn’t so much a review, as it is an opportunity to highlight how well the features on the PS5 controller work.
